Simple Ways to Cut the Cost of Pet Care

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Pets bring an unexplainable amount of joy to our lives, but it's no secret that being a pet parent can be expensive. After all, by assuming the role of a pet owner, you take on the responsibility of caring for them in both their best and worst times, and just like our own care and the care we provide to children, pet care comes at a price too.
Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital | Animal Hospital Summit NJ
We have good news for you, though. Although pet care costs can add up, there are certainly things you can do to keep those costs low! And what's even better is that it's really not too difficult. Below, take a look at how you can work on cutting the cost of pet care.

Bring your pet to the vet for routine check-ups.
Taking your pet in for yearly exams is a lot more cost effective than ignoring them and waiting until something serious happens - not to mention, you risk the health of your pet by skipping wellness visits too. Treating illnesses and other health concerns can be a lot more expensive than protecting against them, so it's well worth it to visit your vet as recommended for routine check-ups.

Have your pet spayed or neutered.
Spaying and neutering doesn't just help reduce the overpopulation of animals - it also helps protect your pets against serious health concerns. For example, female animals that are not spayed have a higher risk for mammary tumors and uterine infection, which would require a very critical and a very costly surgery. Additionally, female dogs and cats will continue to go into heat when not spayed, and this can potentially result in pregnancy problems at an older age. For the males, a health concern in particular that neutering can help prevent is testicular cancer. Considering that all of these health concerns would cost money to treat, spaying or neutering is a cost effective choice.

Brush your pet's teeth.
We know it can be hard to get your pet to sit still, but poor dental hygiene can result in dental disease, which can further lead to heart and kidney problems. Keeping your pet's teeth and gums healthy is an easy way to protect against serious diseases and illnesses, and your main expenses will really just be the supplies you need to brush. If you have a dog that makes it difficult for you to brush their teeth, we have some tips for you here. We also have a $299 dental special going on right now!

Look into pet plans and pet insurance.
If you ever need to bring your pet in for an emergency visit or if they have a serious illness that requires treatment, we know it could put a financial strain on you - this is where pet insurance and pet plans can come in handy! Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital we offer one-year unlimited canine and feline well-care plans (ask us for pricing!) and there are tons of pet insurances out there that you can look into.

See, it's simple! If you're looking for a veterinarian in Westfield, Plainfield, Murray Hill, Summit, New Providence, or Berkeley Heights, NJ to help with preventative pet care, routine exams, spays/neuters, animal density and more, we've got you covered.

Fun Games That You Can Play With Your Cat

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Cats may be asleep for more of their lives than they are awake, but that doesn't mean they don't need just as much play time as say, dogs do. If you have a playful kitty in your life, below are a few fun games that you can play with them to let them release their energy.

Animal Hospital Plainfield NJ | Animal Hospital Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital

Fetch.
Believe it or not, there are some cats out there who want to engage in a game of fetch just like dogs do. And while not all cats will actually bring a ball (or toy mouse) back to you, they will certainly enjoy you tossing something across the floor over and over again so that they can run after it.

Catch the prey.
Cats LOVE when you drag something across the floor on a string - this gives them the opportunity to bring out their inner hunter and stalk and pounce! And it doesn't matter if it's a ball on the end of the string, a mouse, or some feathers - your cat should definitely respond to anything that mimics a real life hunting situation!

Find the catnip.
Although not all cats are attracted to catnip in the same way, for those that are, you can expect your cat to go crazy during a game that's kind of like hide and seek - except instead of you hiding, you're hiding a toy stuffed with catnip! There are tons of toys out there that already have catnip built in, so just take your pick and enjoy the fun.

In addition to playing these games indoors, did you know that cats can be trained to walk on a leash too? If your cat has a lot of energy and could use some exercise, perhaps you should consider training it to be able to go on walks with you! A bonus here is that you'll even get a little exercise in too.

Do you have any other fun games that you and your cat play that we should add to our list? If so, be sure to share them with us on Facebook and Twitter!

Should Your Pet Eat Dry Food, Wet Food or Both?

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | Animal Hospital Westfield NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
Deciding on dinner for yourself is hard enough, so when it comes time to choose a type of food for your pet, how are you supposed to know what kind they'd like best? Many pet parents have struggled with figuring out if they should feed their pet dry food, wet food or both, and if you're in the same boat right now, we want to make it easy for you: there's no right or wrong answer!

Ultimately, it comes down to what is right for you and your pet - this you can figure out by asking your veterinarian for a recommendation, and we also think reading over these pros and cons of each will help:

Wet Food

Animals need water to survive just like we do, but the truth is that not all animals drink as much water as they need to. This is where wet food can be beneficial - wet foods are a great source of hydration! If your pet isn't a fan of his or her water bowl and you suspect that his or her water needs aren't being met, wet food would seem like the appropriate choice.

Just like there are benefits though, there are also some drawbacks to wet food. For starters, wet food can be a bit messy and require more cleaning up. Additionally, wet food will spoil faster than dry food once it's been opened and put out, so you'll need to get feeding times just right to ensure none of the food goes to waste!

Dry Food

Dry food has proven to be extremely convenient for pet owners everywhere due to its long shelf life. If you'll be away from home for an extended period of time and want to ensure that your pet has enough to eat, you won't have to worry about dry food spoiling. Additionally, many pet owners prefer dry food over wet food since it can be more cost effective, and there are some brands that help with dental health!

As for drawbacks, the most obvious would be that dry food does not provide the moisture that wet food does, so if an animal is not drinking water the way they should, dry food wouldn't provide the water they need.

Like we said earlier, there really is no right or wrong answer to what type of food your pet should be eating - instead, it's really all about what's best for their health, what satisfies their hunger, and what makes sense for you as a family!

If you have questions about the food your pet should be eating, you can always ask the trusted veterinarians here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital. Your pet's health is our number one priority, so we'll share as many of our expert tips with you as we can when it comes to keeping your pets healthy for years to come!

Veterinarians New Providence NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
Your pets are an extremely important part of your family, so we're sure that you wouldn't put them in the hands of just anyone when it comes to their medical needs. When you're ready to choose a veterinarian for your furry friends, remember that you're looking for someone who can do more than just address an animal's health and well-being - you're really looking for someone who can provide the loving care and attention that your pets need and deserve.

That said, whether you're looking for a veterinarian to care for your first pet or are looking for a new veterinarian to take over your current pets' needs, here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

Scope of services.
You'll want your veterinarian to be well-rounded in the services they provide, as your pet may have various needs throughout their lifetime. Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital we offer everything from wellness exams to animal dentistry, spays and neuters, surgery, preventative care, microchipping and more!

Emergency services.

We at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital have joined forces with 24-hour Newton Veterinary Hospital, so all of our clients can rest assured knowing that an expert is on staff at all times to aid with emergencies.

Affordability.

Not only is the first exam FREE for our new clients, but we also offer specials (such as our $299 dental special) and we also offer one-year unlimited canine and feline well-care plans.

Tips for Traveling With Your Pet

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

There are still a few weeks of summer left, which means there is plenty of time available for you and your family to head out on a vacation before the back-to-school season starts. For some, that may mean packing up just the humans in the house, but for others, that may also mean packing up the family pet to bring them along too.
Animal Hospital New Providence NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
If you have a summer vacation planned and know that you'll be bringing your furry friend(s) with you, here are some tips to help keep them happy and safe:
  1. If your pet isn't microchipped, they need to be for identification purposes. In addition to this, they should also have a collar on that clearly identifies their name, your name and your phone number so that someone can get in touch with you should your pet get loose during the trip. Bonus tip: you should also include where you're traveling to and from on your pet's collar.
  2. Aside from your pet having the proper identification on them, also make sure that their travel crate has identification information on it. Again, you should include their name, your name and your phone number, and it also wouldn't hurt to have information such as your address on it or a picture of your pet attached either.
  3. Regarding the specifics of your pet's carrier, make sure it is large enough for your pet to be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. If you'll be taking your pet along with you on a road trip, make sure that the carrier is securely fastened within the car so that it doesn't move or slide back and forth, especially in instances where you may have to hit your brakes a little harder.
  4. Always prepare a travel kit specifically for your pet. That means packing items such as a water bowl (and water), extra food, a leash, some plastic bags, their favorite toy or two, and anything else that will help make your pet feel comfortable.
  5. If you are driving to your destination, never ever leave your pets alone in a parked car. Even if you leave the windows open, a parked car can become extremely hot, extremely fast, and as you probably know this is extremely dangerous for animals. If you know you'll have to stop, make sure you're choosing places that are pet-friendly so your pets can go with you.
For additional travel tips, check out this article from The Humane Society of the United States.

Prior to leaving for vacation, it's also a good idea to have your pet seen by their veterinarian to ensure that they are in good health and ready for travel. For the best veterinary care in Berkeley Heights, Murray Hill, Summit, New Providence, Plainfield and Westfield, NJ, visit Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital. If your pet will be a new patient with us, your first exam is free!

Dental Care Tips For Your New Puppy

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

You've just welcomed your brand new pup into your home and you've gotten started on the training process - now what? Although as humans we put a lot of emphasis on keeping our teeth healthy, a lot of the time new pet owners forget how important it is to do the same for their furry friends. So, once your pup has gotten settled into their new home and has become acquainted with your family members, it's time to get into a smart dental routine.
Animal Dentistry Summit NJ | Animal Dentistry Berkeley Heights NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
To keep your puppy from experiencing major oral problems as he or she grows and matures, here are three very important things you should do in your first year together:
  1. Get your puppy used to people touching his or her mouth. The easiest way to get your new puppy used to the feeling of someone touching his or her mouth (whether it be you or your veterinarian) is to do exactly that - touch his or her mouth. However, don't go at this aggressively - a good time to start is when you two are sitting and cuddling together. And since animals respond positively to praise, make sure you reward your pet for letting you touch their mouth, such as by giving them a treat afterwords. Tip: if your pet is extremely uneasy the first few times you handle their mouth, dip your finger in something that they'll enjoy the taste of.
  2. Watch what your puppy is munching on. Despite the fact that puppy teeth do fall out eventually, you still want to keep them in good shape - a broken puppy tooth or two will land you in the vet just as if it was one of their adult teeth. So, monitor what they munch on and try to keep them only chewing on toys that are safe for their little teeth - there are plenty of toys specifically made for teething purposes! A rule of thumb to find out if a toy is safe or not is to see if you can dent it with your own fingernail - if you can't, it's too hard for your puppy!
  3. Start brushing regularly. Like human teeth, unless puppy teeth are brushed regularly, it's likely that they'll develop tartar, which later leads to health concerns like gingivitis and periodontal disease. That said, once your puppy feels comfortable with you touching his or her mouth, start to introduce the idea of brushing. While you do want to brush all teeth, the first few times you may only be able to do a few, and that's okay! Even if it's a slow start and takes a while for your puppy to warm up to the idea of having their teeth brushed, what matters is that you're developing the right habits early.
Still have questions about how to care for your new puppy's teeth? Write to us on Facebook or Twitter or contact us at (908) 464-0023! We recommend that you bring your dog in for an annual dental exam and teeth cleaning to ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy, and we are currently offering a $299 dental special that includes a cleaning, scaling and polishing!

4th of July Safety Tips For Your Pets

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Happy (almost) 4th of July! How will you be celebrating this weekend? Whether you have plans to grill in your own backyard or attend a neighbor's BBQ, we know that you may have the desire to keep or bring your furry friends with you. However, before you think about doing so, remember that your pet's safety should be kept top of mind.

To ensure that your pets are kept safe this weekend, we've collected a few safety tips for you to read through below.

Animal Hospital Murray Hill NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ
  1. Keep alcoholic drinks out of reach. Unfortunately, alcoholic drinks can poison pets and cause severe harm, so it's important that all cups, glasses and bottles are kept well out of reach. But since there is always the potential for a spill, we highly encourage you to closely monitor your beverage (and ask others to do the same) so that if anything should be knocked over, you can clean up the mess immediately.
  2. Avoid feeding your pets table food. We know that it can be especially tempting to slip your pet some of your leftovers when they look up at you with those adorable eyes, but as hard as it is, you need to avoid giving in. That's because "people food" can be harmful to pets and cause an upset stomach or various other health issues.
  3. Make sure your pet has the proper identification. This tip applies to your every day, but especially on a holiday where people may be walking in and out of your home/yard constantly, make sure your pet is wearing the proper identification. This way, if they should accidentally slip out the door or under your gate, it is easier for friends, family members and neighbors help you find them.
  4. No party accessories! Planning to hand out glow necklaces and bracelets to your guests? If so, don't hand over any to your pets! Sure they may look cute with a red, white and blue necklace on, however, ingesting the luminescent substance inside can be harmful. Not to mention, if your pet chews on them and eats the plastic, they could wind up with some pretty major intestinal problems.
  5. Put pets indoors during fireworks shows. Fireworks sure are pretty, and we bet your pets would think so too. However, loud noises can be especially frightening for pets, and when subject to listening to them, it can be easy for them to get nervous and run for cover. That said, keep them inside the house and perhaps even turn on the TV so that you can drown out the loud booms.
For additional 4th of July safety tips, check out what the ASPCA has to say.

From all of us at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we wish you (and your pets!) a very happy and safe 4th of July. Should your pet need emergency care over the weekend, please give us a call at (908) 464-0023.

How To Show Your Pets That You Appreciate Them

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Aside from the love you receive from your family and friends that are close to you, there really is no love greater than the love that comes for your pet. Although they cannot talk and tell us how they really feel, you can just tell by their actions that their love is forever and unconditional.
Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | Pet Appreciation Week
While you likely feel the same and provide your pet with a similar unconditional and forever love, since this week is Pet Appreciation Week, we think it's appropriate to take it up a notch - here's how you can do so:
  1. Shower your pet with love and attention when you get home from a day at work, school, or any other activity that keeps you out of the house for an extended period of time. You know they missed you, so let them know you missed them too!
  2. Set aside some play time for just you and your pet. It doesn't matter if you play a game of fetch in your yard or take them on a walk/run for some exercise, all that matters is that you give them your undivided attention for a bit - they'll know and appreciate it more than you can imagine!
  3. Don't skimp out on the treats! Especially if your pet is young and still in the training process, make sure they know when they've done a good job. And although you don't want to give them too many treats in one sitting, a little something extra this week won't hurt.
  4. Bring them a gift. If it's been a while since your pet received a new chew toy, or if they've been sleeping in their same bed for a few years now, think about presenting them with something new! Should you go the new toy route, remember tip #2 and set aside some time for the both of you to play with it.
  5. Spend some more time petting and cuddling. Let's face it, your pets just want to be with you as often as they can, so the more time you spend with them, the better! Whenever your pet or cuddle them, remember to get down close to their level so that you can be face to face rather than tower over them.
Last but not least, you can also show your pet how much you care by making an appointment for a wellness visit with your vet! While your pet may not be a fan of the vet, making sure they are healthy and in good shape is one of the best ways for you to keep looking out for them.

For those of you in Berkeley Heights and New Providence, NJ, we at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital can provide all of the medical care your pet needs! We've been caring for pets since 1976, and would love to have you and your furry friends come on board.

The Benefits of Adopting a Cat

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023
Cat Spay New Providence NJ | Adopt A Cat Month
Did you know? June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! As is explained by the ASPCA, June begins the height of kitten season, which means there will be tons and tons of felines out there looking for their forever homes. That said, there's no better time than now to start your search for the perfect addition to your home if you've been thinking about adopting! But if you haven't been, here are 7 reasons why you should adopt a cat right now:
  1. Adopting a cat helps you contribute to the larger effort that is to minimize overpopulation in shelters.
  2. Animal shelters are truly focused on the best interests of the animals rather than making a sale, so you can rest assured knowing that your kitten has been well taken care of before they enter your home.
  3. If you find the right place, sheltered cats may already be spayed or neutered so that you don't have to take on the responsibility of having it done (if your cat hasn't had this type of medical attention yet, though, we can help with that!).
  4. Between their sweet, soothing purrs and soft fur, cats are awesome stress relievers for their owners.
  5. Cats can be extremely independent, so your schedule won't be too heavily impacted by having one to care for.
  6. Cats can be the best friend you never knew you were missing and will stand by you every step of the way.
And most importantly, the seventh reason why you should consider adopting a cat is that you'll be saving a life.

Do we have you convinced yet? If you're ready to rescue a kitten and make them the newest member of your family, know that the team here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital will be there for all of their medical needs! From spays and neuters to dentistry, other surgical procedures and emergency care, we truly do it all.

How To Keep Your Pets Safe During Backyard BBQs

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

With Memorial Day weekend just a few days away and the weather warming up to our usual spring and summer temperatures, we wouldn't be surprised if most of you are breaking out the grill to get ready for what might be your first BBQ of the season. Not to mention, May is National Barbecue Month! Whether or not you have a cookout prepared for this weekend's holiday, if you'll be hosting a BBQ at some point this summer, we want to make sure your pets are kept safe and sound.

Below, take a look at our favorite tips for keeping your pets safe during backyard BBQs:
Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | Animal Hospital Berkeley Heights NJ
  1. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar. With you and your guests entering and exiting your home, via both your doors and possibly a gate, there is a greater chance of your pet slipping underneath your feet and getting away from you. Should your pet accidentally get out, you'll want him or her to have the proper ID so that neighbors know where to return him or her to. Bonus tip: if your pet will be allowed outdoors during your barbecue, consider keeping it on a leash so that it doesn't roam too far.
  2. Warn guests about people food. More people means more opportunities for your pets to get fed, but remember that your pets should not eat people food! Politely ask guests beforehand to keep their food to themselves (no matter how cute your pet may look), and have a bag of pet-friendly treats ready to give your pet instead.
  3. Keep grilling tools out of reach. In addition to your cooking utensils, make sure that items such as plastic wrap and tin foil are also kept high and out of reach - if your pet makes any of these grilling accessories their new chew toy, they could wind up with tummy troubles that require serious medical attention.
  4. Don't leave drinks unattended. If alcoholic beverages will be served, make sure that any open bottles or cans are always being watched while your pet is around. Although your pet isn't going to pick up the drink themselves, if something should get knocked over and spill, it can be super dangerous for your furry friend to start licking up the mess.
  5. Use the grill away from guests. If your pet loves attention, you can bet they're going to flock to all of your guests. So, to keep them away from your grill and the hot flames/dangerous materials, make sure that you aren't grilling near the seating you've set up - if your guests aren't hanging out around the grill, there's a better chance that your pet won't be either!
Summer events and parties are meant to be fun for everyone, including all of your fur babies, so we encourage you to follow these tips during every backyard BBQ you host this year. But, if despite your efforts your pet should still pick something up that they shouldn't have, the veterinarians here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital would be happy to provide the care they need - our relationship with Newton Veterinary Hospital makes our care available 24 hours a day.

Tips To Keep Your Pet Safe In Spring

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023
Animal Hospital Murray Hill NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
Although it's a bit chilly today for spring, as we start to embrace that warmer weather is coming, our pets are sure to get excited too. Let's face it, after a long few months of what might have included shorter walks and less time outside, they probably have the same spring fever that you do! But remember, with a new season comes new rules that you need to follow to ensure that your pets are kept safe:

Always Secure Pets In The Car
Your furry friend sticking his or her head out the car window with the wind blowing can be a super cute sight, but it can also be dangerous. If you plan to take your pet to the park on the next nice day, make sure they are kept secure during the ride by buckling them in with the proper seatbelt harness or use a crate.

Carefully Store Lawn Care Products
Now is the time where many of you may be starting your spring lawn care routine, but keep in mind that fertilizers and the like can be hazardous to pets. If you plan to work outdoors, make sure that you store all lawn and garden care products out of your pet's reach once you're done. Furthermore, if you plan to have a garden, make sure you're choosing pet-friendly plants.

Follow A Flea and Tick Control Program
As a result of your pets spending more time outside, they may be more exposed to bugs such as fleas and ticks. To prevent them from being harmed, ask your vet about a flea and tick control program that you can follow so that they remain 100% healthy all season long.

Install Window Screens
There's nothing like opening the windows on a beautiful spring day, but unless your windows are equipped with screens, you could be putting your pets at risk! To prevent your pets from jumping or worse, falling, out of your windows, install screens where they aren't already and check them regularly to make sure they are secure.

Be Mindful About Spring Cleaning
Even though your spring cleaning routine may differ from your friend's or your neighbor's, one thing that everyone has in common is the fact that cleaning products will be used. But, a lot of your typical household cleaners contain chemicals that can be harmful to pets! Make sure you're using pet-safe products by checking out the ASPCA's article on poisonous household products.

Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we care about your pets just as much as you do, which is why we want them to be kept safe at all times this spring! If you have questions about the proper spring safety measures or are in need of veterinary care, please give us a call at (908) 464-0023.

How To Celebrate Your Veterinarian on National Doctors' Day

Veterinarians New Providence NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ

Happy National Doctors' Day! Although we are thankful for them every day, today we are especially grateful to have some of the top veterinarians on our staff. From wellness exams to surgery, dentistry, spays and neuters, and emergency care, our vets always view your pets as their number one priority and will do whatever it takes to ensure that they are well cared for.

We know we'll be celebrating our veterinarians and all they do for our practice all day long, but what about you? Here are a few ways that you can thank your vet today and every day:
  1. Send a thank you card: Often times it's the simple things that mean the most, and a handwritten thank you card is one of those simple things that can really go a long way! It doesn't matter if you purchase a thank you card to write in or make your own - just the act of showing your vet that you appreciate their dedication to your pet(s) is viewed as something special (don't forget to include your pet's name in the signature!).
  2. Bring in snacks: Food is one of those things that can put a smile on anyone's face, so if you want to do something a little more above and beyond, consider bringing your vet an assortment of their favorite snacks - cookies and donuts tend to be a fan favorite! If you want to take it even one step further, you may also want to consider donating some snacks for all of the furry friends the animal hospital cares for.
  3. Verbalize your thoughts: The next time you bring your pet in for a visit, remember to verbally thank your vet and the rest of the hospital's staff for all of their hard work. Kind gestures like those in examples one and two are always appreciated, but hearing someone say thank you and recognizing your efforts in person surely means a lot.
Since 1976, the veterinarians here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital have been providing exceptional veterinary care services. To learn how we can help your pet next, please visit us on our website or give us a call at (908) 464-0023. And don't forget, the first exam for all new clients is FREE!

Everything You Need To Know About National Puppy Day

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Tomorrow is National Puppy Day, and we couldn't be more excited! Celebrated every year on March 23rd, National Puppy Day was founded by Colleen Paige, Celebrity Pet and Home Lifestyle Expert and Author, back in 2006 - now it's considered an international holiday!
National Puppy Day | Animal Hospital Murray Hill NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
The Meaning Behind National Puppy Day

Although we certainly don't need an excuse to show our puppies, as well as the rest of the puppies all over the world, some love and affection, National Puppy Day is a day to do just that - according to the National Puppy Day website, it's a day dedicated to celebrating the magic and unconditional love that our puppies bring into our lives. But that isn't all it's about; it's also a day that is dedicated to helping save orphaned puppies and is meant to help educate the public about puppy mills.

How To Celebrate National Puppy Day

As some of the biggest pet lovers around, we'll definitely be celebrating National Puppy Day - will you? If you're looking for some ideas on how to do so, here are a few to consider:
  1. Spend the day at your local animal shelter to help care for the puppies in need.
  2. Pick out some of your favorite puppy toys and donate them to your local shelter.
  3. Take some time to puppy-proof your home to ensure that your furry friends are kept safe 365 days a year.
  4. Encourage others to adopt puppies looking for their furever homes and educate your friends and family on the issues surrounding puppy mills. You may even want to consider writing to your local leaders to encourage them to stand up to and ban puppy mills in your area.
  5. Shower your puppy with lots of love, and maybe even a new toy or two!
If you've been thinking about sharing your home with a puppy for quite some time, now is also the perfect time to visit your local animal rescue or shelter and find your perfect match.

Adopt, Don't Shop

We couldn't finish our discussion on National Puppy Day without quickly touching on the importance of adopting. According to The Humane Society, there are about 10,000 puppy mills in the United States, if not more, and a major source of encouragement for the development of puppy mills is pet stores that sell what many call "designer puppies." But, if more of us begin adopting rather than shopping at these pet stores, it may result in puppy mills going out of business.

Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we love your pets just as much as you do! We'd love to hear how you're celebrating National Puppy Day this year, so be sure to stop by our Facebook page and share your ideas (and pictures!) with us.

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital provides veterinary care for your pet. In fact, we've been caring for your sick pets since 1976 -- that's 40 years! We offer cutting-edge veterinary care, including surgical procedures, dog and cat spays and neuters and so much more. Let's take a closer look:

Wellness exams

Don't wait for symptoms -- early detection can save your pet's life! Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital recommends yearly wellness exams for pets under 7 years of age. For senior dogs and cats 7 and older, a wellness exam every 6 months is advised.

Preventative care

Our preventative veterinary care focuses on parasite prevention and testing. Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, ringworms, fleas, heartworms and ear mites aren't just bad for your pets; they can also pose a threat to your family. Even indoor cats and dogs need to be tested! If your pet is not already on a prevention program, ask us how to get started.

Animal surgery

The surgical suite at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Some of our most common surgical procedures include:

  • Spays and neuters
  • Declaws
  • Wart, cyst and mass removal
  • Suturing lacerations
  • Foreign body removal
  • Ear hematoma repair
  • Hernia repair
  • Cherry eye surgery
  • C-sections
  • Exploratory abdominal surgery
  • Cystotomy
  • Splenectomy
  • Gastronomy
  • Companion animal laser therapy

Dentistry for your pet

Did you know that caring for your pet's teeth is one of the bet ways to extend his or her life? Just like us, our furry friends are susceptible to tartar buildup and gum disease. Moreover, infected gums and abscessed teeth can lead to infection in the kidneys, liver and heart. Take advantage of our $299 dental special, which includes cleaning, scaling and polishing.

Spays and neuters

The doctors of Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital recommend spaying or neutering your pet at 6 months of age. Spays and neuters can help prevent tumors, infections, urinating in the house, spraying on furniture, mounting people or objects, and aggressive tendencies. Plus, by spaying and neutering our pets, we can all help reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats!

Emergency veterinary care

We're proud to offer emergency care through our sister hospital, Newton Veterinary Hospital. By joining forces, our patients also benefit from the tremendous resources and services of a 24-hour veterinary hospital. All records can be accessed at any time in the event of an emergency, making treatment as quick and safe as possible.

To inquire about one or more of our veterinary services, give us a call at 908-464-0023. Don't forget to find us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube!

National Dog Biscuit Day: Healthiest Brands

It's National Dog Biscuit Day, and pet parents across the country are celebrating by treating their furry friends to their favorite goody. But before you allow your pet to indulge, consider this: Just nine years ago, thousands of dogs and cats were poisoned to death by tainted food products.

veterinarians summit nj - veterinarians murray hill nj

If we learned anything from 2007's "Great Pet Food Recall," it's that not every pet food brand can be trusted. Below, we outline some of the healthiest options as reported by Rover.com:

1. Ultra

Dog biscuits from this brand are 100 percent all-natural, contain high-quality protein, and even boast added antioxidants, which help to boost your dog's immunity. They come in a number of varieties, too -- including blueberry and pomegranate!

2. Blue Buffalo

In search of dog treats made from real ingredients? Blue Buffalo is just what you've been looking for. In fact, you'll find a definition of each and every ingredient -- including meats and herbs -- at the company's website. Plus, the pet food business offers a variety of dog biscuits for a number of purposes, from dental care to training.

3. Homemade

Let's face it -- nothing beats the taste and nutrition of homemade food. And, thanks to BarkPost, concocting a dog biscuit doesn't have to be difficult! Check out this healthy, no-bake dog treat recipe that calls for just five ingredients.

Now go forth and spoil your pup rotten! (But, remember, even healthy treats should be enjoyed in moderation.)

Tips for a Smoother Veterinary Visit

Pets and pet parents both want the same thing: smoother visits to the vet. Unfortunately, our furry friends can come to fear veterinary care for a variety of reasons, from bad past experiences to general anxiety. It can be hard for us to see our four-legged family members in distress, but sometimes a trip to the animal hospital is necessary.

veterinarians murray hill nj - animal hospital summit nj

Follow these tips to prevent your pet's next veterinary visit from becoming a disaster:

  • Help your pet become accustomed to his carrier and to traveling in your vehicle
  • Perform practice run-throughs at home to make the experience less foreign
  • Consider stopping by to say hello -- just be sure to inform the staff of your casual visit to make sure it's a good time
  • If your pet behaves aggressively, avoid the waiting room altogether; simply wait in the car until the vet can see you
  • Bring your pet's favorite toy or treat
  • Medicate if ncessary
  • If you're visiting a new veterinarian, bring your pet's medical records
Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we promise to treat your sick pets like family. You and your pet will feel at home in our office, which is located near Murray Hill in New Jersey! To make an appointment, give us a call today at 908-464-0023.

Walk Your Dog Month: Safety Tips

January is Walk Your Dog Month! Unfortunately, it's very cold (and even snowy) throughout much of the country right now. With that in mind, here are some safety tips for walking your dog -- and a few that apply specifically to cold weather areas:

veterinarians new providence nj - veterinarians summit nj

1. Get a sturdy leash and collar

This tip is relevant year-round. Make sure your dog's leash and collar are "appropriate for the size and strength of your dog," recommends Cesar's Way. Inspect the collar and leash periodically for damage, rust and rips.

2. Wear reflective clothing

You and your pooch should both don reflective vests -- especially if you walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening. This is especially true during the winter months, when the sun rises late and sets early. Reflective gear will help you stand out to drivers in snow and rain as well.

3. Pick up some dog boots

Some pups do just fine in the cold weather, but others are not designed for frigid temperatures. If you notice chafing on your dog's paws, look into getting him a pair of boots. Your furry friend's footwear will also protect him from salt, which is often used on roads and sidewalks in an effort to melt snow.

4. Avoid icy areas

Arthritic and elderly dogs are likely to have more difficulty walking on snowy and icy surfaces. Prevent slips and falls by sticking to grassy or dirt-covered spots. If you don't have a choice in the matter, keep the walk brief, and keep an eye out for signs of weakness and instability.

Follow these dog walking safety tips during Walk Your Dog Month and the rest of the year to keep you and your pet free from danger! In need of veterinary care? Call Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital today to make an appointment: 908-464-0023.
