Fun Fall Activities You Can Do With Your Pet

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Pets are a major part of the family, so it's not surprising that most pet owners look for ways to incorporate their furry friends into their every day activities. With fall officially in full swing, what plans do you have that your pet can tag along for? If you're looking for a few ideas, we've got you covered:
  1. Go hiking. Your pets need exercise just as much as you do, so consider a hiking trip and bring them with you! Not only will a hike get them moving, but it'll also give them some time to enjoy the great outdoors.
  2. Take them pumpkin picking. What's cuter than your pet sitting in a field filled with pumpkins? We can't think of much! So long as the pumpkin patch is pet-friendly, pack up your pet and let them help you find the perfect pumpkin for carving this year.
  3. Play football. Fall is all about football, so get your pet in on the action and head outdoors for a game or two! No, they won't be able to catch the ball and toss it back to you, but we bet they'll love running around and chasing after the football when you throw it.
  4. Go costume shopping. Humans aren't the only ones who can dress up for Halloween - there are plenty of pet costumes too! That said, plan a day where you shop to find the perfect Halloween costume for your four-legged friend - pet stores that are pet-friendly are the perfect place to start (maybe your pet will even hint at which costume they like best!).
  5. Watch a scary movie. There's nothing like cuddling up on the couch with your pet, so plan a night where you'll stay in and hang out just you two. And while you're making yourself some popcorn, make sure you have treats ready for your pet to enjoy too.
Have another activity that you and your pet enjoy doing every fall? If so, be sure to share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter!

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital has been caring for pets since 1976. Veterinary care services include, but are not limited to, animal surgery, spays and neuters and animal dentistry. For more information, please call (908) 464-0023.

The Importance of Microchipping Your Pet

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023
Veterinarians New Providence NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
Did you know that today is Check the Chip Day? For those of you who might be unfamiliar with them, microchips are small, electronic chips that help with the identification of pets. They are about as small as a grain of rice, and they are injected under an animal's skin through the use of a hypodermic needle (don't worry, it's not that painful for pets, and for the most part it feels like a standard injection!).

Although pet owners never want or dream of having their pet be lost or stolen, microchips can help in the event that this does happen. How? Microchips are programmed with identification numbers that can be read by a microchip scanner - so long as the number is registered with the microchip company, anyone who scans your pet's chip can get information that is associated with it, such as your contact information. Once they have that, they can then get in touch with you and work on reuniting you with your pet!

According to Petfinder, the American Humane Association estimates that over 10 million cats and dogs are lost or stolen in the U.S every year - that's an extremely high number! Should your pet ever become one of the 10 million that are lost or stolen, a microchip can be the answer the finder needs to ensure your pet finds its way back home.

Things to keep in mind...

Since microchips help the finder get vital information about you, the animal's owner, you want to make sure that the information you have registered with the microchip company is accurate and up-to-date. So, for example, if you are moving, make sure that the company knows your new address and how they can reach you should your phone number be changing - if the information associated with the microchip is not correct, it'll be much harder to find you.

Also, keep in mind that microchips do not act as a GPS and cannot be used to help you pinpoint the exact location of your pet - they only contain the identification number your pet is assigned. Once the chip is scanned and the number is received, the finder can then get your information from the microchip company and let you know where your pet has been found.

While a collar is a must to help with the identification of your pet, a microchip is something that you must not overlook either. Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we recognize just how valuable a microchip can be, which is why we can help with having one put in your pet!

To learn more about our microchipping services or to make an appointment for one, please give us a call at (908) 464-0023.

Tips for Traveling With Your Pet

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

There are still a few weeks of summer left, which means there is plenty of time available for you and your family to head out on a vacation before the back-to-school season starts. For some, that may mean packing up just the humans in the house, but for others, that may also mean packing up the family pet to bring them along too.
Animal Hospital New Providence NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
If you have a summer vacation planned and know that you'll be bringing your furry friend(s) with you, here are some tips to help keep them happy and safe:
  1. If your pet isn't microchipped, they need to be for identification purposes. In addition to this, they should also have a collar on that clearly identifies their name, your name and your phone number so that someone can get in touch with you should your pet get loose during the trip. Bonus tip: you should also include where you're traveling to and from on your pet's collar.
  2. Aside from your pet having the proper identification on them, also make sure that their travel crate has identification information on it. Again, you should include their name, your name and your phone number, and it also wouldn't hurt to have information such as your address on it or a picture of your pet attached either.
  3. Regarding the specifics of your pet's carrier, make sure it is large enough for your pet to be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. If you'll be taking your pet along with you on a road trip, make sure that the carrier is securely fastened within the car so that it doesn't move or slide back and forth, especially in instances where you may have to hit your brakes a little harder.
  4. Always prepare a travel kit specifically for your pet. That means packing items such as a water bowl (and water), extra food, a leash, some plastic bags, their favorite toy or two, and anything else that will help make your pet feel comfortable.
  5. If you are driving to your destination, never ever leave your pets alone in a parked car. Even if you leave the windows open, a parked car can become extremely hot, extremely fast, and as you probably know this is extremely dangerous for animals. If you know you'll have to stop, make sure you're choosing places that are pet-friendly so your pets can go with you.
For additional travel tips, check out this article from The Humane Society of the United States.

Prior to leaving for vacation, it's also a good idea to have your pet seen by their veterinarian to ensure that they are in good health and ready for travel. For the best veterinary care in Berkeley Heights, Murray Hill, Summit, New Providence, Plainfield and Westfield, NJ, visit Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital. If your pet will be a new patient with us, your first exam is free!

How To Show Your Pets That You Appreciate Them

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Aside from the love you receive from your family and friends that are close to you, there really is no love greater than the love that comes for your pet. Although they cannot talk and tell us how they really feel, you can just tell by their actions that their love is forever and unconditional.
Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | Pet Appreciation Week
While you likely feel the same and provide your pet with a similar unconditional and forever love, since this week is Pet Appreciation Week, we think it's appropriate to take it up a notch - here's how you can do so:
  1. Shower your pet with love and attention when you get home from a day at work, school, or any other activity that keeps you out of the house for an extended period of time. You know they missed you, so let them know you missed them too!
  2. Set aside some play time for just you and your pet. It doesn't matter if you play a game of fetch in your yard or take them on a walk/run for some exercise, all that matters is that you give them your undivided attention for a bit - they'll know and appreciate it more than you can imagine!
  3. Don't skimp out on the treats! Especially if your pet is young and still in the training process, make sure they know when they've done a good job. And although you don't want to give them too many treats in one sitting, a little something extra this week won't hurt.
  4. Bring them a gift. If it's been a while since your pet received a new chew toy, or if they've been sleeping in their same bed for a few years now, think about presenting them with something new! Should you go the new toy route, remember tip #2 and set aside some time for the both of you to play with it.
  5. Spend some more time petting and cuddling. Let's face it, your pets just want to be with you as often as they can, so the more time you spend with them, the better! Whenever your pet or cuddle them, remember to get down close to their level so that you can be face to face rather than tower over them.
Last but not least, you can also show your pet how much you care by making an appointment for a wellness visit with your vet! While your pet may not be a fan of the vet, making sure they are healthy and in good shape is one of the best ways for you to keep looking out for them.

For those of you in Berkeley Heights and New Providence, NJ, we at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital can provide all of the medical care your pet needs! We've been caring for pets since 1976, and would love to have you and your furry friends come on board.

To learn more about our veterinary services, please call (908) 464-0023 or visit us on our website. And don't forget, for all of our new clients, the first exam is FREE!

How To Keep Your Pets Safe During Backyard BBQs

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

With Memorial Day weekend just a few days away and the weather warming up to our usual spring and summer temperatures, we wouldn't be surprised if most of you are breaking out the grill to get ready for what might be your first BBQ of the season. Not to mention, May is National Barbecue Month! Whether or not you have a cookout prepared for this weekend's holiday, if you'll be hosting a BBQ at some point this summer, we want to make sure your pets are kept safe and sound.

Below, take a look at our favorite tips for keeping your pets safe during backyard BBQs:
Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | Animal Hospital Berkeley Heights NJ
  1. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar. With you and your guests entering and exiting your home, via both your doors and possibly a gate, there is a greater chance of your pet slipping underneath your feet and getting away from you. Should your pet accidentally get out, you'll want him or her to have the proper ID so that neighbors know where to return him or her to. Bonus tip: if your pet will be allowed outdoors during your barbecue, consider keeping it on a leash so that it doesn't roam too far.
  2. Warn guests about people food. More people means more opportunities for your pets to get fed, but remember that your pets should not eat people food! Politely ask guests beforehand to keep their food to themselves (no matter how cute your pet may look), and have a bag of pet-friendly treats ready to give your pet instead.
  3. Keep grilling tools out of reach. In addition to your cooking utensils, make sure that items such as plastic wrap and tin foil are also kept high and out of reach - if your pet makes any of these grilling accessories their new chew toy, they could wind up with tummy troubles that require serious medical attention.
  4. Don't leave drinks unattended. If alcoholic beverages will be served, make sure that any open bottles or cans are always being watched while your pet is around. Although your pet isn't going to pick up the drink themselves, if something should get knocked over and spill, it can be super dangerous for your furry friend to start licking up the mess.
  5. Use the grill away from guests. If your pet loves attention, you can bet they're going to flock to all of your guests. So, to keep them away from your grill and the hot flames/dangerous materials, make sure that you aren't grilling near the seating you've set up - if your guests aren't hanging out around the grill, there's a better chance that your pet won't be either!
Summer events and parties are meant to be fun for everyone, including all of your fur babies, so we encourage you to follow these tips during every backyard BBQ you host this year. But, if despite your efforts your pet should still pick something up that they shouldn't have, the veterinarians here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital would be happy to provide the care they need - our relationship with Newton Veterinary Hospital makes our care available 24 hours a day.

How To Make Your First Vet Trip Easy On Your Cat

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

If you have a cat at home, then you already know how difficult it can be to try and get them in the car to go anywhere, let alone to go the vet. But what if we told you that it doesn't actually have to be hard? That's right! As long as you know how to properly handle your cat and prepare them for their visit, you'll find that bringing them in for a check-up or procedure isn't so bad after all.

Veterinarians Murray Hill NJ | Animal Hospital Summit NJ | Veterinarians Summit NJ
For those of you who recently brought a new cat into your home, read on to learn how to make their first trip to the vet an easy one.

Introduce your cat to their carrier: Your cat should be comfortable on the car ride to and from the vet, so make sure that their first visit isn't also the first time they're placed in a carrier. If it is, they could experience some additional unwanted stress! Once you make an appointment with the vet, start encouraging your cat to use the carrier as a place to nap or spend some of his/her free time so that it becomes associated with pleasurable activities.

Take short drives around town: Although there are some cats who will just never be a fan of the car, you can help them get used to the idea of it by taking yours on short trips around town every once and a while. Even if you only drive around the block for your first few trips, just having your cat in the car for a few minutes will help them become more comfortable with the idea of driving.

Pack toys and treats: You probably don't enjoy the feeling of being poked and prodded at the doctor, so it's no surprise that cats feel the same way too. But since your vet will need to handle your cat for a bit to ensure it's in good health, it's always helpful if you bring one of their favorite toys and a treat or two that you can use to take their mind off of what's really happening.

At Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, our veterinarians understand that a pet's first visit to the doctor can be difficult - that's why we'll provide only the best care and do everything we can to help keep them calm! To schedule an appointment for their first exam (FREE for new clients!), contact us at (908) 464-0023 today.

5 Incredible Reasons To Adopt A Shelter Pet

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023
Veterinarians Berkeley Heights NJ | National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day | Shelter Pets
Regardless of where they're kept before finding a loving family, all pets deserve a forever home. Today, though, we're going to focus on those pets that find themselves waiting in a shelter in honor of National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day this upcoming Sunday. If you have plans to bring a new furry friend into your home in the near future, here are few reasons why you should think about adopting from your local animal shelter:
  1. You just might save a life. All too often shelter animals are euthanized because too few people are adopting and, as a result, the shelter becomes overcrowded - the Humane Society of the United States explains that 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized each year. By adopting your next pet, you could contribute to the larger effort that is to save sheltered animals from experiencing such an event.
  2. You can help fight against puppy mills. The fight against puppy mills is ongoing for animal advocates, and by adopting, you can help. Puppy mills, which are best described as breeding facilities that care more about the money than the welfare of dogs, continue to stay in business when people buy dogs from pet stores or other online sellers. By adopting from your local rescue or animal shelter, you can start to help put these puppy mills out of business!
  3. You'll help a homeless animal. Some people think that animals wind up in shelters because they're "bad," but the truth is that animals often wind up homeless because of a struggle the homeowner experiences - for example, they might move into an apartment that doesn't permit pets. We know how great it feels to help a homeless animal in need, and we bet you'll feel the same when you rescue one that lost its first home!
  4. You'll experience unconditional love. All animals provide unconditional love to their owners, but one that has gone through a rough patch will thank you more than you may ever even realize. Be the light in what may be a dark time for a shelter animal by welcoming them into your home and providing them with the environment and love they deserve - they'll definitely return the favor!
  5. You'll find a new best friend. Animals of all shapes, sizes and breeds wind up in animal shelters, so if you look hard enough, you will for sure find one that is a perfect match to your personality. If you're looking for an animal to be by your side and experience life with you, we're confident you can find this at your local shelter.
Are you thinking about adopting yet? Although animal shelters and rescues work hard to ensure that your new pet comes to you in their healthiest state, it's always a good idea to have your veterinarian look them over too. For those of you in New Providence, Summit, Berkeley Heights and Murray Hill, New Jersey, choose Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital to help you with all of your pet's medical needs - we've been providing exceptional veterinary care since 1976.

For more information about our veterinary services, please visit us at www.berkeleyheightsah.com or call (908) 464-0023 today.

Everything You Need To Know About National Puppy Day

Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
269 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
(908) 464-0023

Tomorrow is National Puppy Day, and we couldn't be more excited! Celebrated every year on March 23rd, National Puppy Day was founded by Colleen Paige, Celebrity Pet and Home Lifestyle Expert and Author, back in 2006 - now it's considered an international holiday!
National Puppy Day | Animal Hospital Murray Hill NJ | Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital
The Meaning Behind National Puppy Day

Although we certainly don't need an excuse to show our puppies, as well as the rest of the puppies all over the world, some love and affection, National Puppy Day is a day to do just that - according to the National Puppy Day website, it's a day dedicated to celebrating the magic and unconditional love that our puppies bring into our lives. But that isn't all it's about; it's also a day that is dedicated to helping save orphaned puppies and is meant to help educate the public about puppy mills.

How To Celebrate National Puppy Day

As some of the biggest pet lovers around, we'll definitely be celebrating National Puppy Day - will you? If you're looking for some ideas on how to do so, here are a few to consider:
  1. Spend the day at your local animal shelter to help care for the puppies in need.
  2. Pick out some of your favorite puppy toys and donate them to your local shelter.
  3. Take some time to puppy-proof your home to ensure that your furry friends are kept safe 365 days a year.
  4. Encourage others to adopt puppies looking for their furever homes and educate your friends and family on the issues surrounding puppy mills. You may even want to consider writing to your local leaders to encourage them to stand up to and ban puppy mills in your area.
  5. Shower your puppy with lots of love, and maybe even a new toy or two!
If you've been thinking about sharing your home with a puppy for quite some time, now is also the perfect time to visit your local animal rescue or shelter and find your perfect match.

Adopt, Don't Shop

We couldn't finish our discussion on National Puppy Day without quickly touching on the importance of adopting. According to The Humane Society, there are about 10,000 puppy mills in the United States, if not more, and a major source of encouragement for the development of puppy mills is pet stores that sell what many call "designer puppies." But, if more of us begin adopting rather than shopping at these pet stores, it may result in puppy mills going out of business.

Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we love your pets just as much as you do! We'd love to hear how you're celebrating National Puppy Day this year, so be sure to stop by our Facebook page and share your ideas (and pictures!) with us.

Dentistry for your pet

Did you know that caring for your pet's teeth is one of the bet ways to extend his or her life? Just like us, our furry friends are susceptible to tartar buildup and gum disease. Moreover, infected gums and abscessed teeth can lead to infection in the kidneys, liver and heart. Take advantage of our $299 dental special, which includes cleaning, scaling and polishing.

Spays and neuters

The doctors of Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital recommend spaying or neutering your pet at 6 months of age. Spays and neuters can help prevent tumors, infections, urinating in the house, spraying on furniture, mounting people or objects, and aggressive tendencies. Plus, by spaying and neutering our pets, we can all help reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats!

Emergency veterinary care

We're proud to offer emergency care through our sister hospital, Newton Veterinary Hospital. By joining forces, our patients also benefit from the tremendous resources and services of a 24-hour veterinary hospital. All records can be accessed at any time in the event of an emergency, making treatment as quick and safe as possible.

National Dog Biscuit Day: Healthiest Brands

It's National Dog Biscuit Day, and pet parents across the country are celebrating by treating their furry friends to their favorite goody. But before you allow your pet to indulge, consider this: Just nine years ago, thousands of dogs and cats were poisoned to death by tainted food products.

veterinarians summit nj - veterinarians murray hill nj

If we learned anything from 2007's "Great Pet Food Recall," it's that not every pet food brand can be trusted. Below, we outline some of the healthiest options as reported by Rover.com:

1. Ultra

Dog biscuits from this brand are 100 percent all-natural, contain high-quality protein, and even boast added antioxidants, which help to boost your dog's immunity. They come in a number of varieties, too -- including blueberry and pomegranate!

2. Blue Buffalo

In search of dog treats made from real ingredients? Blue Buffalo is just what you've been looking for. In fact, you'll find a definition of each and every ingredient -- including meats and herbs -- at the company's website. Plus, the pet food business offers a variety of dog biscuits for a number of purposes, from dental care to training.

3. Homemade

Let's face it -- nothing beats the taste and nutrition of homemade food. And, thanks to BarkPost, concocting a dog biscuit doesn't have to be difficult! Check out this healthy, no-bake dog treat recipe that calls for just five ingredients.

Now go forth and spoil your pup rotten! (But, remember, even healthy treats should be enjoyed in moderation.)

To make an appointment with Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, give us a call today at 908-464-0023. Don't forget to find us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube!

If you're anything like us, you shower your furry friend in hugs and kisses every day. But in honor of National Love Your Pet Day, which only comes once a year, here are a few extra-special ways to show your pet some love:

Spend quality time. As the saying goes, "He may only be a part of your life. But for him, you are his whole life." Give your trusty companion a little extra attention tomorrow in honor of Love Your Pet Day. Go for a walk, hang out in the yard or cuddle and watch a movie.

Tips for a Smoother Veterinary Visit

Pets and pet parents both want the same thing: smoother visits to the vet. Unfortunately, our furry friends can come to fear veterinary care for a variety of reasons, from bad past experiences to general anxiety. It can be hard for us to see our four-legged family members in distress, but sometimes a trip to the animal hospital is necessary.

Follow these tips to prevent your pet's next veterinary visit from becoming a disaster:

  • Help your pet become accustomed to his carrier and to traveling in your vehicle
  • Perform practice run-throughs at home to make the experience less foreign
  • Consider stopping by to say hello -- just be sure to inform the staff of your casual visit to make sure it's a good time
  • If your pet behaves aggressively, avoid the waiting room altogether; simply wait in the car until the vet can see you
  • Bring your pet's favorite toy or treat
  • Medicate if ncessary
  • If you're visiting a new veterinarian, bring your pet's medical records
Here at Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, we promise to treat your sick pets like family. You and your pet will feel at home in our office, which is located near Murray Hill in New Jersey! To make an appointment, give us a call today at 908-464-0023.

Walk Your Dog Month: Safety Tips

January is Walk Your Dog Month! Unfortunately, it's very cold (and even snowy) throughout much of the country right now. With that in mind, here are some safety tips for walking your dog -- and a few that apply specifically to cold weather areas:

veterinarians new providence nj - veterinarians summit nj

1. Get a sturdy leash and collar

This tip is relevant year-round. Make sure your dog's leash and collar are "appropriate for the size and strength of your dog," recommends Cesar's Way. Inspect the collar and leash periodically for damage, rust and rips.

2. Wear reflective clothing

You and your pooch should both don reflective vests -- especially if you walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening. This is especially true during the winter months, when the sun rises late and sets early. Reflective gear will help you stand out to drivers in snow and rain as well.

3. Pick up some dog boots

Some pups do just fine in the cold weather, but others are not designed for frigid temperatures. If you notice chafing on your dog's paws, look into getting him a pair of boots. Your furry friend's footwear will also protect him from salt, which is often used on roads and sidewalks in an effort to melt snow.

4. Avoid icy areas

Arthritic and elderly dogs are likely to have more difficulty walking on snowy and icy surfaces. Prevent slips and falls by sticking to grassy or dirt-covered spots. If you don't have a choice in the matter, keep the walk brief, and keep an eye out for signs of weakness and instability.

Follow these dog walking safety tips during Walk Your Dog Month and the rest of the year to keep you and your pet free from danger! In need of veterinary care? Call Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital today to make an appointment: 908-464-0023.

5 New Year's Resolutions for Pet Parents

A new year is the perfect opportunity to take a step back and reevaluate your habits and routines. As a pet parent, you have a big responsibility -- to make sure your furry friend is happy, healthy and well-taken care of.

So instead of resolving to lose weight or eat more vegetables, why not promise to be an even better pet parent in 2016? Here are some ideas:

1. I will walk my dog daily! Even pets are susceptible to winter weight gain. Vow to walk your dog every day -- this winter and year-round -- to keep his heart in good shape.

2. I will play with my pet! When's the last time you made time to play with your furry family member? Set some time aside every day this year. Even just 30 minutes will help your pet get exercise and strengthen your bond.

3. I will stop feeding my pet human food! Your trusty companion gets all the nutrients she needs in high-quality pet food. Table food will only cause weight gain and other health issues.

4. I will take my pet on an adventure! Take your dog on a hike, or give your cat a tour of the backyard. After all, we could all use a change of scenery from time to time.

5. I will schedule a veterinary appointment! Regular veterinary care is important. To make an appointment with Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital, head to our website or give us a call at 908-464-0023.

The Importance of Grooming Your Pet

There's nothing cuter than a freshly-groomed puppy or kitten, complete with a big red bow for the holidays. But grooming your pet is about more than looks; it's an integral part of keeping him or her healthy.

Here's why it's so important to keep your pet well-groomed:

  • Matted fur can lead to pain and health issues
  • An accumulation of dirt and oil can cause skin infections
  • Extreme matting can affect your pet's vision, mobility and eating habits
  • Proper grooming can prevent and treat fleas
  • Long nails can become painful and make walking more difficult
  • Brushing your cat can prevent fur balls
  • Checking your dog's ears can help prevent ear infections
  • Brush your pet's teeth to prevent decay and bad breath
